Local STEM Charter School Thanks BankFirst for Helping Much-Needed Expansion Efforts
The mission of Orlando Science Schools is to offer middle and high school students in Orange County a high quality education, aligned with the Florida Sunshine State Standards, in an intellectually nurturing learning environment. Its purpose is to enable students to reach their maximum potential in all subject areas with special emphasis on mathematics, science, and reading utilizing state-of-the-art curricula such as Connected Mathematics Project (CMP), College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM), Foundational Approaches in Science Teaching (FAST), and Academy of Reading. Research literature on these programs has indicated that these exemplary programs are effective and accessible to all levels of students, not only high performing students. Results consistently show that students who are engaged in these programs perform as well as or better than other students.
“At Orlando Science Schools, a public charter elementary, middle and high school in Orange County, we embrace an innovative science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum. Teachers harness children’s natural curiosity through hands-on lab exercises and team-based activities. On our STEM track, students work two years ahead in math and can choose among robotics and CAD software classes. Students also gain confidence as they showcase their talents by competing at the local, state and national levels of Science Olympiad and Math Olympiad. We are also proud that our FCAT scores rank among the highest in the state of Florida.
With nearly 760 number of current students with huge waiting list, we have been literally bursting at the seams in need of more space at our current 45,000 sq. facility. Thanks to BankFIRST’s financing and efforts, we were able to secure a much-needed separate facility for our K-5 students located on Technology Drive in Orlando, which we are proud to open this fall. The partnership with BankFIRST is integral in our school’s continued commitment to grow and better serve our students. The bank has been a true partner and understands our unique needs and long-term vision.
Still, increasing access to STEM education remains a formidable challenge – and we want it to be available to more students in not only Orange County – but throughout Central Florida. We hope that the growing support for STEM education will expand opportunities for students – giving every child a chance to fall in love with these subjects at an early age.”
