John W. Martin Named BankFIRST’s Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Donald J. McGowan, President and CEO of BankFIRST, announced today that John W. Martin has been named the bank’s Senior Vice President / Chief Financial Officer. A long-time resident of Central Florida, Martin brings nearly 36 years of financial and leadership experience to his new role. He will report directly to Thomas P. Abelmann, BankFIRST’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “John’s extensive background in finance and accounting, coupled with his Senior Management expertise is extremely impressive and we are very pleased to welcome him to our team. His reputation in the marketplace precedes him, both professionally, and as a result of his strong ties to the greater Winter Park community,” McGowan said.
“John is a very welcome asset to our organization, and brings a breadth of experience to his role. His industry expertise has enabled him to immediately become engaged in the financial operations of the bank,” commented Abelmann.
Martin entered the financial services industry in 1975, and has served Winter Park and greater Central Florida for the length of his career. He began his tenure in public accounting with Ernst & Young, and then moved into community banking with Firstate Financial, F.A., Orlando. Throughout his extensive career, he has gained vast experience in the areas of financial statements, liquidity and cash management, regulatory reporting, budgeting, investment portfolio management, and merger/acquisition activity. In addition he has managed multiple support functions reporting directly to him including: deposit operations, information processing, human resources and treasury functions.
Most recently, he served as Senior Vice President / Chief Financial Officer at First Southern Bank’s (FSB’s) Central Florida Division, Orlando, where he was responsible for successfully converting and transitioning First Commercial Bank of Florida to FSB.

A graduate of the University of Central Florida, Martin received his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 1976, and is a Certified Public Accountant. His community involvement includes: the Greek Orthodox Church, Active Member; Winter Park Racquet Club, Member and Past Board Member; American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Member; Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Member; Winter Park YMCA, Member and Past Board Member; Boy Scout Troop 625, Active Leader; Kiwanis Club, Past Member; Jaycees, Past Member; the Orlando University Club, Past Member; and the Citrus Club, Past Member.
